What Is Freestyle Footbag? Disciplines, Scoring, and How to Start

Freestyle footbag is the discipline of performing routines of tricks — kicks, stalls, and combinations — often set to music and scored in competition. It’s the most visible side of the sport and the reason footbag clips do so well on social video: a good freestyle run looks impossible.

How freestyle is structured

A trick is a sequence of contacts with moves in between — spins, dexterities (passing the bag under a raised leg), jumps, and ducks. String contacts together and you have a combo; string combos into a routine and you have a competitive run. Judges score difficulty, variety, and execution (clean stalls, few drops). There are also “shred 30” style formats that count how many unique tricks a player can land in a short window.

The disciplines around it

Freestyle sits alongside footbag net (a volleyball-style game over a low net) in the competitive sport. The International Footbag Players’ Association organizes events, and world championships have run for years. You don’t need any of that to enjoy freestyle — most players just want to land their first clipper-to-spin.

How to get into freestyle

  1. Nail the basics: inside kick, toe stall, clipper (see our beginner tricks guide).

  2. Add a set position and link two stalls with a kick between them.

  3. Introduce one add — a spin or a duck — and build from there.

  4. Film yourself. It’s the fastest feedback and it’s how the community shares progress.

The gear that matters

Freestylers overwhelmingly use higher-panel, sand-filled bags for the rounder shape and dead, controllable feel. That’s the entire design intent of the 32-panel CORE Edition. Start on the 14-Panel OG and graduate to CORE as your stalls tighten up.
